March 8, 2010 - ‘Doctor Who’ UK tour, premiere announced

Doctor Who will begin a UK tour later this month, it has been announced.

The three-day jaunt will introduce Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith and his companion Karen Gillan to fans and will screen a regional premiere of episode one of the new series, titled ‘The Eleventh Hour’.

Smith and Gillan will begin their tour on Monday, March 29 in Belfast before travelling to Inverness and Sunderland via a specially themed Who bus the following day. Salford and Northampton are scheduled for Wednesday, March 31.

“This is a great opportunity for the new Doctor and his companion to interface directly with the people who matter most to Doctor Who: the fans,” said executive producer Piers Wenger.

“The chance to visit them in their hometowns will ensure that the Eleventh Doctor’s maiden voyage is an utterly magical one.”

Following the tour, the BBC will also hold events at selected BBC Big Screens across the UK, beginning on April 1.

March 4, 2010 - Anti-piracy ads target digital-savvy youth over illegal downloads

The UK film and television industry is to launch a series of anti-piracy ads that spoof classic films such as Jerry Maguire, Reservoir Dogs and The Sixth Sense, one of which can be seen for the first time here.

The nationwide cinema campaign, called “You Make the Movies”, launches tomorrow night and seeks to convince digitally savvy younger viewers that illegal downloading prevents good films from being made. It also aims to thank viewers for supporting film-making and their favourite actors by legally buying DVDs and downloads and going to the movies.

The series of four cinema ads, developed by the Industry Trust for IP Awareness, were directed by Steve Bendelack, who has directed comedies such as League of Gentlemen and Little Britain.

The ads, which also include a spoof of Toy Story to target a youth audience, have been voiced by Adulthood actor Noel Clarke.

The cinema campaign will be supported by an outdoor ad campaign, which will run on the Piccadilly digital site as well as billboards in shopping centres and pubs, pushing a “pro-copyright” message.

“This kind of public education campaign can complement the government’s plans to introduce legal measures to tackle online copyright infringement by inspiring consumers to want to choose legal content formats,” said Liz Bales, director general of the Industry Trust.

The four ads have been developed by ad agency The Creative Partnership and follow the first “You Make The Movies” campaign, which was launched in April last year, which spoofed films including Jaws, The Life of Brian and The Lord of the Rings.

These campaigns have replaced the old “piracy is a crime” approach, which was based around the message that illegal downloading was the same as stealing a car, handbag or TV. Those ads ran in cinemas from 2004 to 2007, and on DVDs in the UK for a further year.

March 4, 2010 - ‘Sarah Jane’ gets two-year renewal

Doctor Who spinoff The Sarah Jane Adventures has been recommissioned for two new series, it has been announced.

The fourth and fifth series will each run to 12 episodes, airing in Autumn 2010 and Autumn 2011 respectively.

Show creator and executive producer Russell T Davies, who left as showrunner on Doctor Who earlier this year, will remain in the role on both new series of SJA.

Nikki Wilson, producer on series three, has been promoted to executive producer, while Torchwood’s Brian Minchin has joined the team as a producer.

“We are thrilled to be making many more episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures,” said CBBC controller Damian Kavanagh. “It has been a huge ratings and critical success on CBBC and we hope our viewers are going to be hooked on Sarah Jane’s action-packed adventures for some time to come.”

The fourth series, which begins filming in Cardiff later this month, sees regulars Tommy Knight (Luke), Daniel Anthony (Clyde) and Anjli Mohindra (Rani) return alongside Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane).

Adversaries in the new run of episodes include the Nightmare Man and the Shansheeth, while the gang will travel to an alien world for the first time and take a “dangerous journey back in history”.

Series four writers include Phil Ford, Joseph Lidster, Rupert Laight, Gareth Roberts and Clayton Hickman.

March 3, 2010 - John Barrowman ‘to star in Glee’ as he reveals more about Desperate Housewives role and views on new Doctor Who and Torchwood

Doctor Who and Torchwood star John Barrowman has revealed he’s meeting with the producers of Glee in Los Angeles – and is hoping to land a part as a teacher.

The star, who flies out to the States on Thursday to start shooting his scenes on Desperate Housewives, said he was thrilled to even be asked along for a chat as he was such a huge fan of the show – or ‘Gleek’, as he called himelf.

He enthused: “I absolutely love the show. What would I play in it? I’m not sure what kind of character I’d like to play, maybe I could be a teacher, you know, another teacher who comes in and helps out.

“That’s me just kind of brainstorming but the fact that they want to have a meeting with me is really quite nice in itself, it’s so exciting!”

As for his forthcoming appearance on Wisteria Lane, John revealed he’d always been a massive fan of Desperate Housewives too and would be in for six episodes as character Patrick Logan.

He told Mirror.co.uk: “I just got the script last night. He is the most evil character they’ve ever introduced to the series. And that’s saying something!

“I’ve been told I’ll not only be involved in what they call ‘the current mystery storyline’, but I’ll affect every single housewife on the street. I can’t wait! I’m going to be having my Starbucks in the morning with Eva Longoria, woohoo!”

John said he’d landed the part as the show’s producers were fans of him as Captain Jack in Torchwood, which is shown in the US on BBC America.

However, John revealed that there had still been no green light regarding a new series of Torchwood, even though Russell T Davies has said he’s already written another 15 episodes and the last mini-series of the show on BBC1 landed six million viewers.

First rumours said it was due to start shooting at the start of this year, but now there’s speculation that it may be axed in the current BBC cuts.

John said he was equally unsure about the future of the show.

He said: “If I’m asked to go back and do Torchwood, I will at the drop of a hat go and do it. It’s just a question of when.

“But if they were to ask me to come back, of course I would. Look, Captain Jack changed my life, I’m not going to dump him.”

John also confirmed that he wouldn’t be in the new series of Doctor Who, but was as excited as the fans to see it.

He said of new Doctor, Matt Smith: ”I’m sure he’ll bring his own personality to it and his own quirks. Everytime the Doctor changes, as a nation, we all kinda go ‘oh, we’re really sad and it’s going to be hard shoes to fill’, but we all get on the Tardis with the new Doctor and we all go on that journey because the show is the iconic thing.

“I would agree (that David Tennant was the best Doctor ever), but 10 or 20 years ago whoever it was then, they were probably voted the best ever also, it just depends on the audiences at the time. But David was a great Doctor.”

John even penned a track on his self-titled new album in honour of Tennant’s Doctor – called The Doctor And I, a version of The Wizard And I from musical Wicked.

John explained: “David (Tennant) has heard it, he heard it at a concert that I did and I sang it specially for him and he loved it, and Russell has heard it and Russell loves it…That song is a thank you to all of my fans.”

Of the other tracks on the album – including Barry Manilow’s Copacabana and You’ll Never Walk Alone - former West End star John explained: “The songs that I’ve chosen are songs that have an emotional connection to me, they’re from my heart and I want the listener to understand that it’s not just a random choice of songs.

“It wasn’t difficult to choose these ones because they meant so much to me, to my life.”

And finally, John insisted there had been no falling out with Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber over not being a judge on his new Wizard Of Oz talent show, after Denise Van Outen claiming she’d been ousted because she was pregnant.

John said: “I’ve got no comment on Denise not being on the show, because I’m not a woman and I’ll never be pregnant, but the reason I’m not doing it is because I’m going off to do Desperate Housewives.

“I’m telling you the honest-to-god truth, there was no malice, there was no anger, there was no fighting, nothing, except I was asked too late.”

John is also in secret talks about another UK TV show, but couldn’t confirm a thing as negotiations were still ongoing.

March 3, 2010 - Sarah Jane Adventures gets RTS nomination

The Sarah Jane Adventures has been nominated for a Royal Television Society award. The CBBC drama has been nominated in the Children’s Drama category and is up against MI High and Roy – all of which are CBBC drama’s. The Sarah Jane Adventures is a spin-off from Doctor Who and stars Elisabeth Sladen as former companion to the Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith. So far three seasons of the spin-off have been produced to critical acclaim and good ratings. While a fourth season has yet to be officially announced by the BBC it is widely expected to happen.

The spin-off has previously been nominated for a Children’s Bafta in 2008 and in 2009 was nominated for a Welsh Bafta – both times in the Drama Category. In the recent third season actor David Tennant crossed over to the spin-off for two episodes as the 10th Doctor. John Leeson has also reprised his role of the voice of K-9 for the spin-off in numerous episodes and Nicholas Courtney reprised his Doctor Who role of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart for two episodes in the show’s second season.

March 1, 2010 - Matt Smith: ‘Doctor Who is a real challenge’

Matt Smith claims he wasn’t worried about the challenge of taking on the role of Doctor Who.

The 27-year-old, who is the youngest ever Time Lord, told Esquire that he is committed to the iconic part.

“It’s just to give everything I have to this show,” he said.

“I go in, do 14 hours on set, then come home and learn lines. I’m saying reams of mad dialogue, and you can’t blag that, you have to know it inside out.”

The actor claims he’s always felt a link to the role even when he was younger.

“At university I had a big coloured scarf, and people would often say ‘Alright, Dr Who?’ And I thought, I rather liked the notion.”

Some of the actor’s family also believed he was destined for the role – his mother sent him a text to say he would make an excellent Time Lord before he even knew that David Tennant was quitting.

As a child Smith wanted to be a footballer and even played for Leicester City and Nottingham Forest youth teams until an injury forced him to quit.

“It was very tough though,” he said.

“I remember crying, because that was all I’d ever invested in.”

“I hadn’t really considered acting.”

The new series of Doctor Who starts in early April on BBC.

February 25, 2010 - The New Doctor Who Arrives on BBC AMERICA April 17th

BBC AMERICA announced today that the new era of the BBC’s iconic BAFTA-winning drama, Doctor Who, will make its U.S. premiere on Saturday, April 17, 2010, soon after the UK broadcast.

Doctor Who, BBC AMERICA’s highest rated series ever, continues its tradition of rebooting with new lead actors and creative team.  Matt Smith debuts as the new, Eleventh incarnation of the famous Time Lord alongside a new traveling companion, the enigmatic Amy Pond (Karen Gillan).

“Britain has a tradition of reinventing its iconic characters, like James Bond and Sherlock Holmes – and Doctor Who. In introducing the Eleventh Doctor, writer Steven Moffat is opening the show to a whole new audience, while serving fans with an exciting mix of inter galactic, time traveling adventures. We can’t wait to meet his new Doctor!” comments Richard De Croce, Senior Vice President Programming, BBC AMERICA.

BAFTA-winning writer Steven Moffat, creator of some of the most frightening and award-winning Doctor Who episodes to date, takes over as lead writer and executive producer.  Writers for the new series include Richard Curtis (The Boat that Rocked, Love Actually), Chris Chibnall (Law & Order UK, Torchwood), Toby Whithouse (Being Human, Torchwood), Mark Gatiss (The League of Gentlemen, Sherlock) and Simon Nye (Men Behaving Badly, Hardware).

Guest stars include SAG Award winner Alex Kingston (ER, Flash Forward), Oscar nominee Sophie Okonedo (The Secret Life of Bees, Hotel Rwanda) and Tony Curran (24).

Traveling both through time and space, the new series has the mysterious Doctor and Amy Pond together exploring sixteenth century Venice, France during the 1890s, and the United Kingdom in the far future, now an entire nation floating in space. The first three episodes of the 13-episode series have been confirmed as “The Eleventh Hour,” written by Steven Moffat, “The Beast Below,” also by Moffat, and “Victory of the Daleks” by Mark Gatiss.

Moffat’s work includes the hit comedy Coupling, the critically-acclaimed thriller Jekyll, the new BBC series Sherlock, and, along with Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, the screenplay for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn – which is being directed by Steven Spielberg.

Piers Wenger (Ashes to Ashes) and Beth Willis (Ashes to Ashes) are the executive producers. It is a BBC Wales production for BBC ONE and distributed by BBC Worldwide.

February 25, 2010 - John Barrowman backs ‘Over The Rainbow’

John Barrowman has backed Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Over The Rainbow to be a success.

The Torchwood actor appeared on the judging panel on Webber’s three previous talent shows, I’d Do Anything, How You Solve A Problem Like Maria and Any Dream Will Do.

Barrowman admitted that he would have liked to have been involved in the search for a new Dorothy, but claimed that he is pleased for new judge John Partridge.

Speaking on Richard Bacon’s BBC 5Live show, he said: “I’m a big friend of Dorothy so I don’t think I’d have a problem finding one!

“The BBC wanted me to do it, but the independent company who are producing the show for them didn’t ask me until Christmas. And I had to make a decision about [appearing in] Desperate Housewives by that point, so I couldn’t do it.”

He added: “John Partridge – he is a BBC One boy, he understudied me in the West End, a great gig for him and he’ll be really good.”

February 24, 2010 - Barrowman ‘unsure’ over ‘Torchwood’ future

John Barrowman has claimed that he knows nothing about the future of Torchwood.

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, the singer-actor said that he would love to do another series, but is unsure if it will go ahead.

Asked about a potential clash between Torchwood and his upcoming stint on Desperate Housewives, he replied: “I don’t know if we’re gonna be filming Torchwood.

“I haven’t heard anything. I haven’t heard anything about what you’re talking about! I only know that I would – at the drop of a hat – love to do Torchwood again. I would love to do more than five episodes. But if we’re only going to do five episodes, I’m happy with that.”

He added: “I love the character, I love the show, and I would love to do it again. But I don’t have any other information – I’m so sorry!

“I have no information on the future of Torchwood – I’m like everybody else at the moment! But I would love to do another Torchwood.”
