Confirmed: Barrowman for ‘Strictly’ Xmas
filed in News

John Barrowman has been confirmed for the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special.

The Torchwood and Desperate Housewives star is one of the first names booked for the festive special of the BBC One show.

For the first time ever, the Christmas Strictly will feature a new cast of celebs, who will be filmed over a two-week period. Producers are aiming to capture stars who have missed out on the full series because they couldn’t commit for the whole autumn.

Speaking about hitting the dancefloor, Barrowman said: “I’ve watched Strictly since the first series and I’m ecstatic to have been asked to be part of the Christmas special.

“I am looking forward to the challenge as it’s so different to any of the dancing that I’ve done before in musicals. But more than anything, I am so looking forward to wearing the costumes. I can guarantee this: there will be sequins.”

Matt Smith talks about the forthcoming Dr Who Live tour and recalls filming his first TV role in Liverpool
filed in Doctor Who, News

The Doctor is coming to Liverpool and the Time Lord’s latest incarnation says Who fans should prepare themselves for some pyrotechnics.

Matt Smith will be right at the heart of the action when Dr Who Live arrives at the ECHO arena next month.

Alas, for dedicated Whovians out there, the 27-year-old Doctor won’t be making a personal appearance at the waterfront venue, although he will be in the audience for the tour’s opening night at Wembley.

But he’s convinced the show will be nothing short of spectacular.

“I think it’s a brilliant idea – it’s going to be really exciting for the audience and particularly the kids,” he enthuses.

“It will be packed full of pyrotechnics, special effects and surprise appearances from monsters all around the auditorium.

“I’m not appearing in person on stage purely because logistically it wouldn’t work. I’m in the middle of filming the new series in Cardiff so I can’t be in two places at once!

“However, the team has come up with an ingenious way of enabling the Doctor to still be part of the show and I’ve filmed specially shot scenes which will be integrated with the action.

“It’s going to be a great event with a live band playing Murray Gold’s music on stage which has been specially arranged for the show.

“There’s also going to be lots of interaction with the audience and the Doctor plays a crucial part in the plot – I don’t want to give too much away, but the Doctor needs the audience’s help.”

What we do know is that it opens in wartime London and concludes in an epic onstage battle, while audiences should expect appearances from arch-enemies the Daleks alongside the Cybermen, Weeping Angels, Judoon and Ood.

It will also feature The Young Ones’ Nigel Planer who will play the part of Vorgenson – an ‘inter-galactic showman’ who is the Doctor’s biggest fan.

The show is directed by Maghull-born Will Brenton, and comes from the pen of executive producer Steven Moffat.

And while he may not make it to Liverpool this time, Matt reveals that his last foray to the Mersey – four years ago when he shot his first TV role, in Ruby in the Smoke down at the Stanley Dock – was more “time please” than Time Lord.

“Liverpool was great,” he reminisces. “We filmed down by the docks, went for a pint, and it’s a city that loves its football so I felt completely at home.”

It’s been something of a meteoric rise since that first appearance – opposite, ironically, previous Doctor companion Billie Piper, with acclaimed performances on stage (Swimming With Sharks, The History Boys) and screen (Party Animals, Secret Diary of a Call Girl).

But the University of East Anglia-educated actor has become a household name with this latest role.

Interestingly, while the rest of us were hiding behind the sofa on Saturday evenings (I spent many a teatime in the company of Tom Baker and his woolly scarf), Matt never watched Dr Who as a child.

But that wasn’t because he disliked the show.

“I was part of that barren period when it wasn’t on air,” he says. “I was obviously aware of it though, as it’s ingrained in the fabric of our society.”

Now though since he got the coveted role of the 11th Doctor, the Northampton-born actor – who was heading for a career as a professional footballer until a serious back injury ended his dreams – has been swotting up on the history of the character.

He laughs: “My general knowledge about Doctor Who is fairly good but I wouldn’t dare say I’m expert yet!

“I’ve loved playing the Doctor and the fans have been really positive. They’re just very passionate about Doctor Who which is a good thing as they form part of the lifeblood of the show.

“I do definitely get recognised in the street more now but it’s part and parcel of being part of something so huge. It’s the Doctor they are interested in rather than me.”

The People Speak on HISTORY
filed in News

Ben Kingsley, Ian McKellen, Noel Clarke and Keira Knightley are just some of the British A-listers joining Colin Firth for The People Speak, a specially shot for TV collection of poems, letters, songs and speeches highlighting significant moments in our history.

The documentary film will air on HISTORY later this month and follows a similar film made by HISTORY’s US channel featuring Matt Damon and Josh Brolin.

The UK version was filmed last month at The Prince of Wales Theatre and includes performances by Omid Djalili, Colin Salmon, Rupert Everett and Juliet Stevenson.

Speaking about the project Colin Firth said: “To me THE PEOPLE SPEAK is the perfect response to the abject misery of my history class as a school by. Considering the immense riches that history offers us in terms of the best and worst of human behaviour – corruption, sexual deviation, rebellion, struggles for power – none of that made it into my history lessons.

“There is absolutely no reason why history should be dry and I’m delighted to be working with HISTORY on an initiative that takes history beyond the classroom; democratising our own legacy and providing a unique voice that resonates as much today as it did when it was first spoken.”

Dr Who stars to light up Cardiff
filed in News

Doctor Who star, Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill take a journey through time to land in Cardiff’s Civic Centre on November 10 when they will be there to thrill the crowds by switching on the city’s Christmas Lights and mark the start of festivities for Cardiff, The Christmas City.

Matt is the eleventh incarnation of the Time Lord and is currently around the city filming his second series of the blockbuster TV favourite with his latest assistant Karen Gillan, who plays Amy Pond, along with her screen husband Rory Williams played by Arthur Darvill.

Matt Smith said: “It’s a real honour to be asked to switch on Cardiff’s Christmas Lights because the city has become like a second home to not only me, but the rest of the Doctor Who production team. We love filming here in Wales and we even managed to get into the festive spirit extra early this year when filming the Doctor Who Christmas Special in August. Cardiff is a great city and I’d like to thank all of its residents for being so welcoming and accommodating.”

The big switch on takes place on King Edward VII Avenue at 7.40pm, after the crowds have been entertained from 6.30pm by children’s favourite Bob The Builder and his sidekicks Wendy and Spud, with music from soul band Supernatural, and compères Real Radio Breakfast Show presenters Jagger and Woody. And BBC Wales presenter Jason Mohammad will be introducing the Doctor Who team to the stage for the big switch on.

Regarding ‘The Vault of Secrets’ Screencaptures
filed in Gallery

I realized the other night after uploading the screencaptures of The Sarah Jane Adventures 4.04 The Vault of Secrets: Part Two that I had capped both parts of the story in the wrong size.  I’ve no excuse other than that my personal life has been a bit hectic this past week. Anyway, I’ve now uploaded screencaptures with the correct dimensions to the gallery and kept the ‘bad’ ones as well. Sorry for any confusion!

John Barrowman for Children In Need
filed in News

‘Torchwood’ actor John Barrowman is to co-host ‘Children In Need Rocks Scotland’, as part of the televised annual charity fundraiser.

The 43-year-old actor is to join forces with Scottish newsreader Jackie Bird for ‘Children In Need Rocks Scotland’ on Friday November 19, where they will introduce bands, comics and musical productions during the evening of charity fundraising.

He said: “Working on ‘Children In Need’ is always a highlight of my year. The cause is such a worthy one, and unfortunately right now the number of children in need in the UK is growing.

“I’m really looking forward to doing what I can to raise spirits and lots of cash.”

Jackie added: “The show is always exciting, but this year we’re really pushing the boat out for our fundraisers and viewers. I hope that in return people will give what they can.”

During the evening, John will front live link-ups between Glasgow’s SECC arena – which seats 4,000 – and the rest of the UK’s broadcasting of the televised charity night.

Bands will include Pearl and the Puppets, dance act The Box and performances from the cast of musical ‘We Will Rock You’.

Manning: ‘Matt Smith is extraordinary’

Former Doctor Who actress Katy Manning has praised the performance of current star Matt Smith.

Manning will reprise her role as Jo Grant opposite Smith in two episodes of spinoff The Sarah Jane Adventures.

“His physicality is one of the most extraordinary things I have seen,” she told TV Choice. “I think it’s wonderful and so appropriate, so creative with this new Doctor.”

She added: “Look at the acts this young boy’s had to follow! It isn’t easy and I think he has done a miraculous job.”

Manning also suggested that her former Who co-star Jon Pertwee would be pleased with her return to the role of Jo.

“He would be thrilled, but he’d be giving us notes!” she joked.
