Davies Isn’t Entirely Leaving The Whoverse

Russell T Davies may be leaving Doctor Who, but he’s staying on with kid-friendly spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures. Why? Because it’s an “amazing” addition to one of the most vital areas of television, apparently.

Talking about the BBC’s decision to renew the Who spinoff for another year, Davies said

“In an age of shrinking budgets and an ever-changing television landscape, children’s TV is right at the front line, and personally I think it’s one of the most vital areas to protect and nourish. So this commission is wonderful… We’re all determined to repay Children’s BBC by delivering an amazing show.”

One of the things to expect from the amazing show – besides “old monsters [and] new monsters” – is something Davies calls “a series finale that’s already got me excited, before a single word is written!” That finale is likely to be written (or co-written) by Davies himself, who’s still firmly in place as the show’s executive producer:

“[Everyone on the show will] have to cope with my beady eye as well, the poor souls – I might be leaving Doctor Who, but not Sarah Jane!”

I’m glad to hear this! Though it does make me wonder about Torchwood…..

Tennant expected fit for new Who
filed in Doctor Who

David Tennant is expected to be fit enough to start filming scenes for a Doctor Who special next month, just weeks after surgery on his back.

The show’s executive producer, Russell T Davies, said he was “hopeful” Tennant would start filming on 19 January.

“We’ll have to be very careful,” he said. “I don’t think we’ll be swinging him on a wire on his first day back.”

The actor’s back injury has forced him out of a London stage production of Hamlet until after Christmas.

Davies, who was speaking at the press launch of BBC One’s Christmas Doctor Who special, The Next Doctor, said there would be no re-writes on the next story to cut down on Tennant’s action scenes.

“No, there’s been none of that, and I think David would have told us by now because he’s read the first script.”

He said the production was insured in case Tennant was still recuperating when filming resumed.

Neither Tennant nor David Morrissey – who plays “The Next Doctor” – attended the launch.

The Christmas story sees them team up to battle a threat from the Cybermen in London on a snowy Christmas Eve in 1851.

The episode also stars Dervla Kirwan, who plays evil workhouse matron Miss Hartigan.

Gallery and Site Updates In the works
filed in Gallery, Site

I just wanted to make a quick post to let you know about some site and gallery updates that will soon be coming your way.

I just finished adding caps from all of Doctor Who Series 2 to the gallery and am now starting to add caps from the third series. Once I’ve done that and added caps of Time Crash and Voyage of the Damned, the screencap section of each shows’ series will essentially be complete. However, after Christmas, along with caps of this year’s Christmas Special: The Next Doctor I will be working on adding DVD quality caps of The Sarah Jane Adventures Series 1 and Doctor Who Series 4 to give you better quality caps. I will be doing the same with each series as it becomes released on DVD in the US (as I am sadly not in the UK) for as long as I run this site and the shows continue to air – which will hopefully be for a long time to come.

Before those DVD caps are added, however, I will be adding more pictures of the cast at different events, posing for different photoshoots, and more promotional shoots and episode stills of each series.

While those updates are being made to the gallery, there will also be some site updates including more in depth episode guides, icons and other graphics, and the other aspects of the guides to the shows will be added.

Stay tuned and in the meantime, enjoy the site and our extensive gallery!

Doctor Who tops iPlayer views
filed in Doctor Who, News

The recent fourth series of Doctor Who is the most watched programme on the BBC’s iPlayer since the online service started last year.

The popular drama series, starring David Tennant as the Time Lord, was also a big hit with more traditional TV viewers with the series averaging a sizeable 8.1m (38.7%) on BBC1. The 13-part run ended with a massive 10.4m (48.2%) on 5 July this year.

The corporation’s iPlayer was made available to the public on Christmas Day last year.

BBC2′s motoring show Top Gear has also been a big hit with online views with both the 11th and 12th series of the programme managing to gain silver and bronze medals.

Regarding the Gallery
filed in Gallery

I’m so sorry that the problem with the gallery has taken almost two weeks to be fixed, however I think that I have found a temporary solution to the problem and will resume uploading screencaps from the second series of The Sarah Jane Adventures as well as the missing episodes of Doctor Who in the coming days.

Thanks so much for all your patience and hopefully everything on the site will continue to run smoothly so that I can bring you more updates!

Tennant out of Hamlet for surgery
filed in News

Actor David Tennant will not be returning to play Hamlet “before Christmas” because of a back injury, the Royal Shakespeare Company says.

The 37-year-old, who is scheduled to have an operation for a slipped disc on Thursday, said his enforced absence was “hugely disappointing”.

His understudy Edward Bennett, who received standing ovations on Monday and Tuesday, will continue to stand in.

Tennant’s run as Hamlet at the Novello Theatre is due to finish on 10 January.

He played Hamlet 60 times in Stratford-upon-Avon in the summer ahead of the production’s London transfer.

“My back problem has progressed to the point where it is currently impossible for me to carry on without surgery,” Tennant said in a statement.

“I want to get back onstage as quickly as possible and I am very grateful to Ed who has courageously got to grips with the role but in a much shorter time. It’s a fantastic achievement.”

Artistic Director Michael Boyd said: “We all wish David a speedy recovery and it is an indication of the RSC’s investment in understudies that Ed Bennett can take over Shakespeare’s largest role at such short notice.”

The RSC said refunds would not be issued “because the company has a fully rehearsed understudy policy”.

“The company is able to offer exchanges, subject to availability, for other RSC London performances during this season at the Novello Theatre,” it added in a statement.

Hamlet no-show for actor Tennant
filed in News

Doctor Who actor David Tennant has pulled out of a second performance of Hamlet due to a back injury.

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) has decided to go ahead with Tuesday’s press night performance with understudy Edward Bennett in the title role.

The play’s director Gregory Doran said Tennant was “gutted” to disappoint the audience at London’s Novello Theatre.

Tennant, 37, who also missed Monday’s preview performance, is due to play Hamlet until 10 January.

Doran said: “David is gutted, not only at the thought of disappointing audiences, but also to be unable to perform a role that he has worked on and developed throughout 60 performances in Stratford-upon-Avon.

“Before this injury, he has only ever been off for one performance in his entire career to date, and is hoping that he will be able to return to the show as quickly as possible.

“It is an indication of the RSC’s investment in understudies that Ed Bennett can take over from David in one of Shakespeare’s largest roles at such short notice.”

Bennett, who normally plays the role of Laertes, received a standing ovation from at the the theatre on Monday when he stepped into Tennant’s role.

Doctor Who makes Christmas debut on iTunes
filed in Doctor Who

The BBC has made the first four series of the resurrected ‘Doctor Who’ available for download from the UK iTunes Store in time for Christmas.

The initiative from BBC Worldwide will see programmes become available throughout December, with a different series released each week from December 2, with Series 4 becoming available on December 23, just in time for Christmas.

It will mean that, for the first time, fans will be able to download and keep a single digital episode or the full series.

‘Doctor Who’ joins a range of BBC Worldwide content already available on iTunes, including ‘Spooks’, and recent cutting edge comedy ‘Gavin and Stacey’ and the latest series of ‘Top Gear’.

Simon Danker, director of digital media at BBC Worldwide, said: “Doctor Who is one of the most popular and enduring brands on British TV and the new series has introduced the Time Lord to a whole new audience. Now, Doctor Who fans young and old can revisit their favourite episodes any time and anywhere.”

Christopher Eccleston first appeared as the Doctor in 2005 when the series was resurrected after a 16-year absence from TV screens.

After the first series, David Tennant assumed the role of the Doctor alongside Billie Piper as his assistant Rose Tyler.

The Doctor has since continued to enthrall audiences with his adventures travelling through time and space accompanied by other companions such as Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) in multi-award winning episodes and Christmas Specials.
